2021 Volvo XC90 vs. 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC: Advanced Power and Better Efficiency

October 26th, 2020 by

The XC90 proves its commitment to cleaner-burning engines and power with the 2021 lineup. Here, we compare the XC90 to the Mercedes-Benz GLC.

The 2021 Volvo XC90 is powerful and more efficient

The XC90’ power levels are very diverse. The T5 engine is built on a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that develops 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The T6, also a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, increases horsepower to 316 and torque to 295.

The XC90’s hybrid features the T8 engine, which is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that combines with an electric motor system. The T8 achieves a net 400 horsepower and a surprising 472 lb-ft of torque.

The GLC family of engines begin their comparison with an efficiency disadvantage. There are some similarities with the XC90’s power, as the GLC 300’s turbocharged 2.0-litre distributes 255 horsepower, and the GLC 300e hybrid reaches 315 horsepower. However, XC90 T8 hybrid achieves far greater power with a fuel economy rating of 9.1 L/100 km in the city and 8.4 L/100 km on the highway.

The GLC’s top model, the AMG GLC 63 S, guzzles fuel with a turbocharged V8 and owns the least efficient fuel economy rating of 15.0 L/100 km in the city and 10.9 L/100 km on the highway. The upfront and operational costs and impact to the environment may not be worth the extra horsepower for many.

The 2021 Volvo XC90 offers a more spacious cabin and versatility

The XC90 features an open, inviting interior that offers more room to fit your family and things they need for their lifestyle. With seats folded behind the first row, the XC90 provides up to 1,855 litres of cargo volume. The GLC peaks at 1,600 litres in the same configuration. If the X90’s middle row is occupied, the vehicle still has up to 1,008 litres of volume behind it.

The XC90’s Scandinavian look and feel inside are light years ahead of the GLC in terms of style, and drivers can take full advantage of the Sensus infotainment system on a large, intuitive 8-inch screen that is more advanced than what the GLC offers.

What’s more exciting is that the XC90 offers something the GLC doesn’t—a third row. When you need maximum passenger capacity, the XC90 is there to help distribute your load properly.
